Training Description
Given the high prevalence of traumatic experience(s) and the pervasive nature of the impact of trauma among individuals who seek substance use treatment, providing trauma-informed care (TIC) in a substance use treatment context is considered best practice. Participants will learn key information about TIC in this three-hour fifteen-minute (3:15) training, which will enable them to recognize various signs of trauma and respond with a strength-based and culturally sensitive approach to foster resilience in patients with substance use disorders (SUDs). The training will provide an overview of TIC approach, followed by explaining the four (4) assumptions of TIC and applying them to a clinical case vignette. Participants will learn common co-occurring conditions that stem from traumatic experiences and SUD. Recommendations on trauma screening tools and effective copings skill for managing traumatic experiences will be provided to enhance substance use treatment engagement and outcomes. The training will conclude with a special focus on building resilience in patients with SUD by exploring the posttraumatic growth (PTG) concept. Participants will be engaged in group discussion, chat, polls and various activities throughout the presentation.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:
1. Describe four (4) examples of the biological and psychological impact of trauma
among those with substance use disorders (SUD).
2. Explain four (4) key trauma-informed care assumptions and how they can be utilized
during engagement in SUD treatment.
3. Apply two (2) trauma-informed interventions to a SUD case vignette.
4. Identify three (3) elements of posttraumatic growth (PTG).
