Who Should Attend
This three-hour fifteen minute (3:15) live virtual training is a free introductory training and is open to
providers working with youth in Los Angeles County including:
• Psychologists & Registered Psychological Associates
• LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs & Licensed Eligible (LE) AMFT, ACSW, APCC
• Certified Peer Support Specialists and Peer Support Specialists 
• Registered and Certified Substance Use Disorder Treatment Counselors
• Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists & Peer Support Specialists
• Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) & Licensed Psychiatric Technicians (LPT)—Now offering CEs
• Registered Nurses & Nurse Practitioners—Now offering CEs

 

Training Description 
This live virtual training is designed for specialty providers of youth prevention and treatment services 
in Los Angeles County including those for youth who are at risk of developing substance use disorders. 
This training focuses on recognizing signs and symptoms of youth substance use as well as current data 
and trends related to youth substance use, misuse, and use disorder. Utilizing a trauma informed 
approach, participants will identify and discuss ways to engage youth who are using substances or are 
at risk of substance use and use disorder including harm reduction strategies. The intersection and 
connection of substance use and mental health in youth populations and its impact on youth will also 
be explored.
This educational training is meant as a resource for specialty youth prevention and treatment providers 
to utilize when working with youth who are considered at risk of developing substance use disorders
and for those with existing substance use issues. Participants will be able to identify appropriate SUD 
resources within the LA County Substance Abuse Prevention and Control’s Substance Use 
Disorder’s Continuum of Care.
Using polls, chat and open discussion participants will be engaged virtually throughout the 
presentation

 

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of general substance use issues as it relates to youth in Los Angeles 
County, including signs and symptoms of common substances of use.
2. Discuss two (2) ways of engaging youth from a trauma informed perspective specifically around 
topics of substance use and mental health issues.
3. Identify four (4) ways of accessing SUD (substance use disorder) resources, screening, and 
treatment throughout Los Angeles County.
