Who Should Attend: 

This three-hour fifteen minute (3:15) live virtual training is a free introductory training and is open to 
SAPC Network providers including:
• Registered and Certified Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselors
• LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs & Licensed Eligible (LE) AMFTs, ACSWs, APCCs
• Psychologists & Registered Psychological Associates
• Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) & Licensed Psychiatric Technicians (LPT)—Now offering CEs
• Registered Nurses & Nurse Practitioners—Now offering CE

Training Description: 

This special training will provide a detailed review of the ASAM Continuum Assessment, with specific  considerations for the practical uses of the assessment to determine, SUD Diagnosis, appropriate level  of care and aid in initial treatment planning. By reviewing the ASAM Continuum Assessment question 
categories and specific questions, participants will learn various strategies for effective administration and interpretation of the ASAM Continuum Assessment. Case examples will be used to illustrate how  to integrate findings from the ASAM Continuum Assessment with clinical insights from the treatment 
provider and recommended approaches to reconcile discrepancies between ASAM Continuum  Assessment findings and clinician recommendations regarding level of care. This training will also  provide updates to the ASAM CONTINUUM and provide real time demonstrations. Participants will develop a better understanding of the intent and purpose of the ASAM Continuum  Assessment, including how to effectively use the tool within the LA County Substance Abuse  Prevention and Control’s SUD continuum of care. Through group discussion, chat, and polls participants will be engaged throughout the training. 

Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of the training, participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the application of at least three (3) clinical and motivational interviewing 
techniques to the ASAM Continuum assessment tool.
2. Formulate Level of Care considerations for patients utilizing the ASAM criteria, ASAM 
Continuum assessment recommendations.
3. Effectively recognize, assess, and diagnose (when appropriate) Substance Use Disorders
based on DSM 5 criteria using information provided by results of the ASAM Continuum 
Assessment.
4. Discuss three (3) distinct effective ways to integrate information from the ASAM Continuum 
into appropriate and required documentation
