MLK and Recovery

MLK and Recovery

As we discussed here last week, in his walk toward civil rights Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was all about freedom and healing – values we also work for in recovery from addiction, mental illness, and other behavioral challenges. Dr. King was not struggling to overcome addiction, but his words give us strength for many of the same things people face in behavioral health recovery.

For example, let’s turn directly to the man for words of encouragement that we can apply to our own journeys.

Quotes from MLK

Encouragement for Hope in Recovery

“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”

Faith in the Process

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.

Any Progress is Good.

If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.

Choose to Forgive

We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.

L.A. CADA wishes you joy in practicing Dr. King’s principles of peace, hope, and progress.
