5 Tips For Staying Sober

Taking the leap to get help is huge as it takes time and patience. It can take several weeks to detox, followed by recovery. But once you finish your inpatient or outpatient care, what’s next? What will help you transition back into the real world, where challenges and temptations lie? You are strong for making it through the recovery process, but knowing your strength for staying sober is ever so important. Be focused on your future and be grateful for all the progress you’ve made.

1. Take care of yourself

Taking care of yourself is crucial to your sobriety, it will help you feel good. Eating healthy and exercising are important, but also being nice to yourself. Many of us find it easier to care for others and not ourselves. Whether it’s taking some time out of our day for self-reflection or to take a stroll in solitude, it’s important to have a healthy outlet to address your physical, mental and emotional state.    

2. Take up a sport or hobby

It doesn’t have to be competitive, but team participation and physically challenging yourself is helpful to your health. This could include running a 5k, taking up yoga, or participating in an organized team sport. If sports are really not your thing, take up a healthy hobby to fill your time. Hobbies take many forms, such as joining a book club, cooking classes, learning to knit, or seeing a live show. Finding a purpose that you can focus your attention on that will give you happiness and entertainment in return.

3. Hang out with people who are supportive of your sobriety

The people you’ve known pre-recovery may be your closest friends, but if they haven’t taken steps to getting sober themselves, it’s not worth it. They may pressure you without even realizing it, making it uncomfortable for you. You want positive influences in your life that will continue to support you in your journey.

4. Take it one step at a time

Don’t worry about the future or where you will be in three weeks or even three years from now. Focus on the now and how far you’ve come. The key to making long lasting changes in your life is by making small adjustments. It is important to acknowledge your concerns and anxiety and focus on the steps you need to make now to improve your future.

5. Rid negativity from your life

It’s amazing how toxic environments can affect your life. To the best of your ability, rid yourself of negative influences, people, or habits from your life, this includes negative talk of yourself. It’s easy to blame yourself or others, but if something or someone is not supportive of your future, cut them out. You’ll be surprised by the difference in your life when your surround yourself with positivity.
