Community to Custody Transitional Reentry Program (CCTRP)

Frances Valenzuela, Program Director, CCTRP

Because of its involvement in the Prison Education Project (PEP), L.A. CADA’s CCTRP has received a lot of attention. Most recently, by KCRW Producer Jenny Hammel, as it applies to the CCTRP movement throughout the State of California. Ms. Hammel was told about the program by PEP Director Renford Reese of Cal Poly Pomona who encouraged her to visit our CCTRP site in order to complete her coverage of PEP. Once here, Ms. Hammel was fascinated by the concept and became interested in expanding her story to a full length segment. She has reported on issues such as mass incarceration and has a good knowledge of the overcrowding crisis in the justice system today.

Many have heard of 89.9 FM KCRW Public Radio Station. The station is known for its intelligent, in-depth reporting of local and international news and special interest stories on popular programs such as “All Things Considered” and “Which Way L.A.”

Ms. Hammel interviewed several CCTRP participants and was involved in a process group with participants and Counselor Martin Garcia. To conclude her piece, Ms. Hammel interviewed Program Director Fran Valenzuela about the program, types of participants, and specific challenges related to operating a program of this type. She toured the facility and was particularly impressed with the goals of the CCTRP and residents’ stories.
